Why Choose Hardwood Materials?

Hardwoods last longer than softwoods and are easier to work with. Hardwood’s durability and natural warmth contribute to its popularity as a flooring choice for many home and business owners. Of the hardwoods, oak is still the most common choice, but cherry and imported woods are also worth considering. You can acquire hardwood is a variety of styles, such as plank, prefinished and parquet boards that you or your contractor can install. We’ve been selling lumber in Middletown, PA, for more than 60 years, so feel free to ask our knowledgeable, friendly staff for help with your project or renovation.

NHLA Grading System

Most hardwood lumber prepared in the United States is graded by standards set up by the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA). In 1897, hardwood lumber producers formed this standardization organization to promote consistent hardwood lumber rating. Previously, individual mills implemented their own rating systems, which weren’t consistent across markets. Today, grading rules are based on the amount and size of clear cuttings.

We Sell FAS, The Highest Quality Hardwood

There are eight hardwood lumber grades in widespread use today. FAS is the highest and No. 3B Common is the lowest. In short, the higher grades of lumber have larger clear areas than the lower grades. The basic concept of grading is that the grade of all lumber is determined from the poorest face or side of the lumber, with a few cases considering the better face as well. Lumber thickness (4/4, 6/4, etc.) is not considered when grading hardwood; the grades are based on the two faces alone.

What Sets Our Hardwoods Apart

You’re in for a pleasant surprise when you buy hardwoods from us. Our hardwoods have excellent color, and you can choose from a range of sizes, including 4/4, 5/4, 8/4, 12/4, and 16/4 thicknesses. Our stock is FAS, the highest grade possible from the National Hardwood Lumber Association. We typically sell hardwood as rough cut, random width and length. However, for valued customers who don’t have the equipment to machine and sand it, we can finish your hardwood materials at a reasonable price.
